National Science Awards - what is?



The National Science Award of the Republic of Estonia is a prestigious governmental acknowledgement of an individual scientist or research group for outstanding scientific achievements. This is a great honour!

The award is given by the Prime Minister on an honourable occasion on the 24th of February - the Independence Day. The ceremony takes place at the headquarters of the Estonian Academy of Sciences.

The laureates are nominated by a special National Prize Commission at the Estonian Academy of Sciences.

The prizes are given annually not more than one in each of the eight categories:
  • Exact sciences
  • Chemistry and molecular biology
  • Technical sciences
  • Medicine
  • Biological and Earth sciences
  • Agricultural sciences
  • Social sciences
  • Humaniora

LOTE research stuff competes generally in the categories of exact sciences, chemistry and molecular biology, biological and Earth sciences, occasionally also in technical sciences. However, more exotic awards to LOTE researchers have been nominated in Medicine and Social sciences.
